I, Getulio Vargas
- Starring Jeffrey Cristiani and Blythe Coleman-Mumford
- 16mm film, 11 min, Fall 2007
- Reproduction of a Dirty Wars-era Brazilian interrogation scene, experienced by one viewer at a time in a residential basement room in Oberlin, OH.
I, Getulio Vargas is an exploration of the processes of narrative and history-making. The film creates a fictional character from a historical one, a persona from what was once a person: Getulio Vargas. Exposing the modes of imitation that drive all narrative cinema, this faux documentary interrogates the viewer into confessing his own imitative role—you are Getulio Vargas.
